Unlike traditional classrooms where subjects stay neatly separated, environmental studies brings together multiple disciplines to help young learners understand their world in a connected, meaningful way. What makes environmental studies interdisciplinary?
At its core, environmental studies draws from multiple fields of knowledge to create a fuller picture of how our world works. Rather than treating science, geography, history, and social studies as separate subjects, environmental studies weaves them together. A primary student investigating a local river, for example, touches on biology when studying aquatic life, geography when exploring the river’s path, chemistry when testing water quality, and social studies when learning how communities depend on clean water.
This integration is essential because environmental issues are inherently complex. Understanding the physical environment requires knowledge of ecology and biology to understand how life behaves in nature, geology and physics to grasp Earth’s natural processes, and chemistry to know about toxins in air, water, and soil. Additionally, solving environmental problems demands more than scientific knowledge-it calls for understanding economics, policy, culture, and human behavior. By bringing these fields together in primary education, students gain the intellectual toolkit they need to become informed citizens who can make sense of environmental challenges.
Breaking subject boundaries: A unified curriculum
Environmental education curricula are interdisciplinary, integrated, and thematic, requiring contributions from multiple subject areas. Environmental Studies at the elementary level is an integrated subject that draws upon insights from sciences (physical, chemical, and biological), social studies (history, geography, civics, and others), and environmental education focused on protection and conservation. The thematic organization of contents cuts across discipline boundaries, developing in children an interdisciplinary perspective toward understanding their environment and environmental problems.
The role of environmental education: Through, about, and for the environment
Environmental education in primary schools operates along three complementary approaches that together create a comprehensive learning experience. Understanding these three approaches helps teachers design lessons that connect knowledge, experience, and action.
Education about the environment focuses on building knowledge and understanding. This is where students learn scientific facts about ecosystems, climate systems, and natural resources. Education about the environment equips learners with knowledge and understandings about the science of the environment in relationship with issues of society, culture, and economics. For example, students might study how photosynthesis works, learn about different biomes, or understand the water cycle. This knowledge forms the foundation for deeper environmental understanding.
Education through (or in) the environment treats nature and outdoor spaces as living classrooms. Rather than reading about forests from a textbook, students visit a forest and experience it directly. This approach considers natural or artificial environments as means and environments of teaching and learning activities, allowing learners to utilize surrounding environments as places for studying, discovering, and experiencing environmental problems practically. These hands-on experiences-whether observing insects in a schoolyard, testing water quality in a stream, or listening to bird calls-create emotional connections to the environment and reinforce academic learning through direct observation and discovery.
Education for the environment empowers students to become environmental stewards. This approach goes beyond knowledge and experience to inspire action and commitment. Education for the environment provides knowledge about the characteristics and essence of the environment to form responsive attitudes, behaviors, and awareness toward the environment, while providing knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary for making decisions to act for protecting the environment and sustainable development. Primary students might plant native trees, organize a school cleanup, reduce waste in their classrooms, or advocate for environmental protection in their communities.
The most comprehensive and effective approach for environmental education is the combination of all three approaches, helping individuals build up and develop their own understandings about the environment, interact with the environment, and apply learned knowledge and skills in protecting it. When woven together, these three approaches create a powerful learning experience where knowledge, experience, and action reinforce one another.
Connecting classroom lessons to real-world issues
The true power of interdisciplinary environmental studies emerges when classroom learning connects to actual challenges students encounter in their communities. A primary class doesn’t just study pollution as an abstract concept-they might investigate pollution in their own neighborhood, identify sources, and propose solutions. They use science to understand the problem, mathematics to measure and record data, language skills to communicate their findings, and social understanding to recognize how pollution affects different community members differently.
The purpose of environmental education is to explore issues affecting the environment and work on solutions, while engaging students in projects where they learn about conservation, create calls to action, work with others, and solve environmental issues in their communities. This project-based, community-focused approach transforms environmental studies from something abstract into something urgent and meaningful to young learners.
For instance, if a school is located near a river, students might study the river’s ecology (science), its historical importance to the region (history and social studies), how it’s used economically (geography and economics), and cultural stories about it (language and culture). Then, they might work together to clean up the riverbank, design educational materials about river conservation for younger students, or present their findings to local government officials. This comprehensive approach develops not only environmental knowledge but also critical thinking, collaboration, and civic responsibility.
Environmental education is a process that helps individuals, communities, and organizations learn more about the environment and develop skills and understanding about how to address global challenges. For primary students, engaging with real environmental issues in their own communities makes abstract concepts concrete and develops their sense of agency-the belief that they can make a positive difference.
