Have you ever wondered where language comes from? It’s a question that has puzzled humanity for centuries, sparking debates among philosophers, theologians, and scientists alike. From ancient myths attributing speech to divine gifts, to modern evolutionary perspectives, the journey to understand how humans began to communicate through words is as fascinating as it is complex. Understanding these theories not only illuminates our past but also helps us appreciate the remarkable tool we use every day to connect, teach, and learn.

Divine theories of language origins

For most of human history, people believed that language was a gift from the gods. This perspective, known as the divine source theory, appears across virtually every major religious tradition. In the biblical tradition, God created Adam and gave him the power to name all living creatures, establishing language as humanity’s first divinely granted ability. Similarly, in Hindu tradition, the goddess Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, is credited with bringing language to humanity.

The appeal of divine theories is understandable. Language seems almost miraculous in its complexity and power. It sets humans apart from all other creatures, allowing us to express abstract thoughts, share knowledge across generations, and build civilizations. For ancient peoples, such an extraordinary gift could only have come from a supernatural source.

The experiments to rediscover the original language

If language was indeed a divine gift, some reasoned, there must be an original, God-given language that humans would naturally speak if left to their own devices. This belief led to several curious experiments throughout history. The Greek historian Herodotus reported that an Egyptian pharaoh named Psammetichus conducted an experiment over 2,500 years ago, isolating two newborn babies with only goats and a mute shepherd for company. After two years, the children reportedly uttered what was identified as the Phrygian word for bread, leading the pharaoh to conclude that Phrygian must be the original human language.

A similar experiment was allegedly carried out by King James IV of Scotland around 1500, with the children reportedly beginning to speak Hebrew. However, modern understanding tells us a different story. Children raised without human language contact do not spontaneously develop speech. Instead, they grow up without any language at all, highlighting that language is learned through social interaction rather than being an innate, pre-programmed ability waiting to emerge.

The organic phase and evolutionary perspectives

By the eighteenth century, thinkers began to challenge the divine source theory and propose more naturalistic explanations for language origins. This marked a significant shift in how humans understood themselves and their abilities.

Herder’s vision of natural language development

German philosopher Johann Gottfried von Herder proposed a radical idea in his 1772 work on the origin of language: that vocal imitation of the natural environment could be the spark that eventually led to fully developed language. Herder suggested that early humans mimicked sounds they heard around them, like animal calls or natural phenomena. Because nearby groups shared similar environments, these imitations could be intuitively understood among them.

What made Herder’s theory particularly important was his concept of a protolanguage, a simpler foundation from which more complex language could develop. He wasn’t claiming that all words came from imitation, but rather that imitation provided the initial spark. Think of it like learning to cook: you might start by following simple recipes exactly, but over time you develop the skills to create original dishes. Similarly, early humans might have started with simple imitations before developing the ability to create entirely new words for abstract concepts.

Darwin’s evolutionary approach to language

Charles Darwin began thinking about the origin of language in the late 1830s as part of his broader work on evolution. In his private notebooks, he observed similarities between animal sounds and the natural cries humans make when expressing strong emotions like fear or joy. He noticed that some words, like “roar” or “crack,” seemed to imitate the very sounds they described.

In his 1871 book The Descent of Man, Darwin presented a more developed theory. He suggested that an early ancestor of humans probably used vocalizations much like male gibbons do today, producing musical sounds for courtship and to compete with rivals. Language as a system of meaningful signs might have evolved from imitating predator sounds, which functioned as warning signals to other group members. Over time, as the voice was used more frequently, the vocal organs would have strengthened and become more refined.

Darwin also proposed that language use and brain development reinforced each other in what we might call a feedback loop. Using language required mental capacity, but it also stimulated the brain to develop further, enabling longer chains of thought and stronger reasoning abilities. This coevolution of mind and language remains an important concept in modern evolutionary linguistics.

Theories of imitation and instinct

By the mid-nineteenth century, linguist Friedrich Max Mรผller entered the debate with a critical perspective on various language origin theories. Though Mรผller himself believed in the divine origin of language, he is best remembered today for the colorful, somewhat dismissive names he gave to theories he disagreed with.

The bow-wow theory

The bow-wow theory, a term coined by Mรผller, suggests that language originated from onomatopoeia, or the imitation of natural sounds. According to this view, early humans imitated the sounds of animals and their environment, gradually developing these imitations into words. A bird making a “cuckoo” sound would be called a cuckoo, or a dog’s bark might inspire the word to describe that animal.

We can see evidence of this process in modern languages. Words like “splash,” “buzz,” “hiss,” and “boom” clearly imitate the sounds they represent. However, critics point out significant limitations. How would silent objects like rocks or abstract concepts like justice be named through sound imitation? Furthermore, onomatopoeic words vary greatly across languages. An English rooster says “cock-a-doodle-doo,” while in Japanese it says “kokekokko,” suggesting these words are cultural constructions rather than direct imitations of natural sounds.

The pooh-pooh theory

The pooh-pooh theory proposes that language evolved from instinctive emotional expressions like cries of pain, exclamations of surprise, or sounds of laughter. When you stub your toe, you might cry “ouch!” When surprised, you might say “oh!” or “wow!” Could these involuntary vocalizations be the foundation of human language?

The theory has intuitive appeal. After all, even animals make sounds when experiencing pain or pleasure. Perhaps early humans simply refined and expanded this natural vocal repertoire. However, a major criticism is that emotional interjections are actually language-dependent rather than universal. An English speaker says “ouch” when hurt, but a Chinese speaker says “ฤiyล,” and a Russian says “oi.” If emotional expressions were truly the foundation of language, we might expect them to be more similar across cultures.

The ding-dong theory

Perhaps the most mystical of Mรผller’s categorized theories is the ding-dong theory, which suggests a natural correspondence between sounds and meanings. Proponents believed that certain sounds inherently fit certain objects or concepts. When you strike a bell, the “ding-dong” sound somehow feels right for describing that action.

Interestingly, modern research has found some evidence supporting aspects of this theory. The Bouba-Kiki effect is a famous experiment where people are shown two shapes, one rounded and one spiky, and asked which is “bouba” and which is “kiki.” Up to ninety percent of people across different cultures associate the rounded shape with bouba and the spiky shape with kiki, suggesting some universal connection between sound and meaning.

Despite this intriguing finding, the ding-dong theory cannot explain most of language. The vast majority of words show no obvious connection between their sound and meaning. Why is a table called a “table” in English, a “mesa” in Spanish, and a “tisch” in German? The arbitrariness of most words suggests that while sound symbolism might play a small role in language, it cannot be the primary origin.

Understanding language origins in elementary education

Why should elementary education students care about theories of language origin? Understanding these concepts is crucial for several reasons. First, it helps us appreciate that language is both a biological capacity and a cultural achievement. Children don’t simply “catch” language like a cold; they actively construct it through social interaction, building on both innate capacities and learned patterns.

Second, recognizing the diversity of theories reminds us that there’s rarely one simple answer to complex questions. Just as language likely evolved through multiple pathways, children learn language through various mechanisms: imitation, emotional expression, social interaction, and cognitive development all play important roles. As future educators, understanding this complexity helps us support diverse learners who may excel through different pathways.

Finally, these theories connect to larger questions about what makes humans unique and how we can best nurture human potential. Whether we view language as a divine gift, an evolutionary adaptation, or a cultural innovation, we recognize it as central to human identity and learning. In the classroom, language is not just a tool for teaching other subjects; it is the foundation of thought itself, shaping how children understand themselves and their world.
