Forests aren’t just collections of trees-they’re living, breathing ecosystems that shape our climate, support wildlife, and sustain human communities. Yet, they face unprecedented threats that demand our immediate attention and action.

Why forests matter more than we think
Forests serve as the planet’s lungs, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing the oxygen we breathe. They house an estimated 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, making them irreplaceable treasures of life. Beyond their ecological role, forests provide direct economic benefits to millions of people. Around 250 million people in India depend directly on forests for their livelihoods, including approximately 100 million tribal people who rely on forests for food, medicine, construction materials, and cultural identity.
Think about the last time you enjoyed fresh air or cool shade on a hot day. Forests regulate local temperatures, influence rainfall patterns, and prevent soil erosion. They act as natural water filters, ensuring clean water reaches our rivers and streams. For rural communities, forests aren’t just environmental assets-they’re lifelines that provide non-timber forest products like honey, medicinal plants, bamboo, and fodder that support daily survival and traditional ways of life.
The social and cultural dimensions
Forests hold deep cultural significance for many communities. In Assam, for instance, elephants have been an inseparable part of Assamese culture and folklore for centuries. During the Ahom reign, works on elephantry like Hastividyarnava were composed, celebrating the bond between humans and these magnificent creatures. Forests are not merely resources to be exploited-they are sacred spaces that connect communities to their heritage, traditions, and spiritual beliefs.
The alarming reality of deforestation in India
Despite their immense value, India’s forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Between 2015 and 2020, India lost an average of 668,400 hectares of forest annually, ranking second globally after Brazil. This represents a dramatic increase from the 384,000 hectares lost between 1990 and 2000, marking India as the country with the biggest increase in deforestation over the past three decades.
The causes are complex and interconnected. Agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, mining activities, and logging all contribute to forest loss. In northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, over 2,000 square kilometers of forest cover vanished between 2000 and 2020. The construction of roads and dams disrupts wildlife corridors, while population pressure forces communities to encroach on forest lands for survival.
When forests shrink, conflict grows
Perhaps the most visible and heartbreaking consequence of deforestation is the escalating human-animal conflict. As forest habitats shrink, wild animals are forced into human settlements in search of food and water. This creates dangerous encounters that often end tragically for both humans and animals.
Consider the situation in Assam, where between 2006 and 2016, wild elephants killed 785 people while 225 elephants fell victim to poaching, speeding trains, poisoning, and electrocution. The numbers tell a grim story: between 2001 and 2014, a total of 245 humans and 146 elephants died in conflicts along the Assam-Bhutan border. More recently, from 2014 to 2022, 3,938 human lives were lost to wild elephant attacks across India, with Assam accounting for 561 deaths.
A particularly poignant example occurred in January 2024 when 43-year-old Anil Rabha lost his life in an elephant encounter in Nam Santipur village. Just days earlier, Kamaleswar Boro had suffered a similar fate in Borkhal village. These aren’t isolated incidents-they’re symptoms of a deeper ecological crisis. Research shows that when forest cover drops below 30-40%, human-elephant conflict expands dramatically across the landscape.
Understanding the cycle of conflict
The mechanics of human-wildlife conflict are straightforward yet tragic. Elephants need vast territories and consume about 240 kilograms of plant material over an 18-hour day. When their natural habitats become fragmented or degraded, they’re compelled to venture into agricultural areas where crops like sugarcane provide both food and cover. Frustrated farmers, facing crop destruction and property damage, sometimes resort to desperate measures-electric fences, poisoning, or confrontation-which often result in elephant deaths.
Leopards tell a similar story. As forests shrink, these adaptable predators move closer to human settlements, taking refuge in tea gardens and occasionally attacking people. In Assam’s Dibrugarh district, a seven-year-old boy was killed in a leopard attack in Satishpur tea garden, while a woman was seriously injured in Tamulbari tea estate while plucking tea leaves. These animals aren’t naturally aggressive toward humans-they’re displaced, hungry, and struggling to survive in an increasingly fragmented landscape.
Conservation strategies that make a difference
Addressing forest loss and its consequences requires multi-layered approaches that combine immediate interventions with long-term planning. At the policy level, India’s government has implemented several initiatives including Project Elephant and Project Tiger, which provide financial assistance to states for habitat improvement and conflict mitigation. Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority has disbursed over Rs. 55,394 crores since 2018 to support afforestation efforts.
But policy alone isn’t enough. Community engagement proves essential in conservation success. Local communities must understand elephant behavior to avoid aggressive confrontations. Anti-depredation squads, solar-powered electric fences, and early warning systems help reduce dangerous encounters. Some states have set up special squads to prevent wildlife intrusions into human settlements, while compensation mechanisms provide relief for human casualties, livestock predation, and crop damage.
Vanamahotsav: Celebrating forests through action
One of India’s most enduring conservation traditions is Vanamahotsav, the annual tree-planting festival celebrated from July 1 to 7. Initiated in 1950 by K.M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food, this week-long celebration coincides with the monsoon season when newly planted saplings have the highest survival rates.
Vanamahotsav isn’t just about planting trees-it’s about building a culture of environmental stewardship. Schools, colleges, NGOs, and government bodies distribute saplings and organize plantation drives, rallies, seminars, and competitions. The festival encourages planting native species that adapt better to local conditions and support indigenous biodiversity. Through activities like nature-themed art exhibitions, essay writing, and debates, Vanamahotsav educates young people about the vital role forests play in climate regulation, soil conservation, and biodiversity protection.
The genius of Vanamahotsav lies in its ability to transform environmental responsibility into a joyful, community-building experience. When children plant a sapling and watch it grow, they develop a personal connection to nature. When communities come together for plantation drives, they create shared commitment to environmental protection that transcends individual interests.
Teaching forest conservation through integrated approaches
As educators, how we teach about forests profoundly impacts how students perceive and interact with their environment. Traditional disciplinary approaches often separate forest-related topics into distinct subjects-studying trees in biology, rainfall patterns in geography, and tribal communities in social studies. While these discrete lessons provide important information, they miss the interconnected nature of forest ecosystems.
From isolated facts to holistic understanding
An integrated approach to teaching about forests recognizes that ecological, social, and economic dimensions cannot be meaningfully separated. When students learn about deforestation, they should simultaneously explore its impact on wildlife behavior, local rainfall patterns, tribal livelihoods, and climate change. The human-elephant conflict in Assam, for example, becomes a powerful teaching tool that connects habitat loss with animal behavior, human safety, cultural traditions, and conservation policy.
Consider how an integrated lesson might unfold. Students could begin by examining maps showing forest cover change over time, then read news articles about human-wildlife conflicts, interview community members about their experiences, calculate the economic impact of crop losses, and finally propose multi-stakeholder solutions. This approach moves beyond memorizing facts to developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Making it real through experience
Experiential learning deepens student engagement with forest conservation. Organizing school participation in Vanamahotsav provides hands-on experience with tree planting and care. Field visits to nearby forests or degraded areas help students observe ecological processes firsthand. Creating school nurseries where students nurture saplings from seeds teaches responsibility and patience while contributing tangibly to greening efforts.
Project-based learning works particularly well for environmental studies. Students might undertake long-term projects monitoring tree growth, documenting local biodiversity, interviewing forest-dependent communities, or creating awareness campaigns about conservation. These projects develop research skills while fostering genuine concern for environmental issues.
Moving forward: From knowledge to action
Understanding forest issues intellectually is important, but it must translate into action. Education should empower students to become environmental advocates who influence their families and communities. Simple actions like participating in tree plantation drives, avoiding products linked to deforestation, supporting conservation organizations, and speaking up for environmental protection can collectively create significant impact.
The challenge of forest conservation ultimately reflects our relationship with nature. Do we see forests as resources to be exploited or as living systems that sustain all life? Do we view wildlife as threats to be eliminated or as fellow beings with whom we share this planet? These fundamental questions shape how we approach conservation and how we teach future generations.
The forests of India face critical threats, but they also represent tremendous opportunities for restoration and renewal. Every tree planted during Vanamahotsav, every student who learns to appreciate forests, every community that develops conflict-mitigation strategies contributes to a more sustainable future. By understanding the complex interconnections between forests, wildlife, and human communities, we equip ourselves and our students to become thoughtful stewards of the natural world.
