Think back to your own learning experiences. Some of your most powerful lessons probably came from a well-structured classroom, with a teacher guiding you through carefully planned lessons. But what about the time you learned to cook by watching your grandmother in the kitchen? Or when you picked up a new skill from a friend during a casual conversation? These diverse experiences highlight an important truth: learning happens in many different ways and in many different places. Understanding the concept of a learning environment helps us appreciate how these various contexts shape not just what we learn, but how we think, feel, and grow as individuals.

What exactly is a learning environment?

When we hear the term “learning environment,” many of us immediately picture a traditional classroom with desks arranged in rows, a blackboard at the front, and students listening to a teacher. While this is certainly one type of learning environment, the concept encompasses so much more. A learning environment comprises the psychological, social, cultural, and physical setting in which learning occurs and in which experiences and expectations are co-created among its participants.

Imagine a young child learning to ride a bicycle in a neighborhood park, surrounded by encouraging family members. That park, with all its social support and emotional safety, becomes a learning environment. Or consider a community center where adults gather to learn a new language together, sharing their experiences and supporting one another. These settings demonstrate that learning environments extend far beyond traditional educational institutions.

The beauty of this broader understanding is that it recognizes learning as something that happens everywhere. A learning environment includes not just the physical space, but also the relationships between people, the cultural values that shape interactions, and the emotional atmosphere that either encourages or discourages curiosity and growth. Whether it’s a bustling marketplace where a child learns basic arithmetic by helping a parent shop, or a quiet library where a teenager discovers a passion for science, each setting offers unique opportunities for development.

How social learning theories explain our development

To truly understand learning environments, we need to explore how experts have explained the learning process itself. Two influential thinkers-Albert Bandura and Lev Vygotsky-have given us powerful frameworks for understanding how we learn from and with others.

Bandura’s social learning theory: learning through observation

Have you ever noticed how children imitate the adults around them? A toddler might pretend to talk on the phone just like their parent, or a young student might adopt the teaching style of a favorite educator when explaining something to a friend. This natural tendency to learn by watching others is at the heart of Albert Bandura’s social learning theory.

Bandura emphasized that people learn new behaviors by observing others, a process he called observational learning. Unlike earlier theories that focused solely on direct rewards and punishments, Bandura showed that we can learn simply by watching what happens to other people. If a child sees their older sibling being praised for helping with household chores, they might start helping too, even without receiving immediate rewards themselves.

But observational learning isn’t automatic. According to Bandura, four key processes must occur for learning through observation to be successful. First, we must pay attention to what’s happening around us. Then, we need to retain or remember what we’ve observed. Third, we must be able to reproduce or imitate the behavior we’ve seen. Finally, we need motivation-a reason to actually perform the behavior ourselves.

Think about a student learning to solve a complex mathematical problem. They watch their teacher work through an example on the board, paying close attention to each step. Later, they remember the process and attempt to solve a similar problem on their own. If they see that understanding this skill will help them succeed in their studies, they’re motivated to practice and improve. This entire process demonstrates how the learning environment-including the presence of knowledgeable models and supportive conditions-shapes what and how we learn.

Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory: learning as a social process

While Bandura focused on observation, Lev Vygotsky took social learning even further. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory emphasizes that learning is fundamentally a social activity shaped by culture and interaction with more knowledgeable others. He believed that children don’t develop in isolation; instead, their cognitive abilities emerge through participation in their cultural community.

One of Vygotsky’s most powerful concepts is the Zone of Proximal Development, or ZPD. This represents the gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance and support. Imagine a child trying to assemble a puzzle. Alone, they might struggle and give up in frustration. But with a parent sitting beside them, offering gentle hints like “Try looking for pieces with straight edges first” or “What color are you looking for?”, the child successfully completes the puzzle. This supportive interaction happens within their zone of proximal development.

The concept of the ZPD reveals something crucial about learning environments: they work best when they provide the right amount of challenge with the right amount of support. Too easy, and students become bored. Too difficult without support, and they become discouraged. The ideal learning environment offers what educators call scaffolding-temporary support structures that help learners accomplish tasks they couldn’t manage alone. As learners become more competent, these supports are gradually removed, much like scaffolding is taken down from a completed building.

Another key element of Vygotsky’s theory is the role of language and cultural tools in shaping thought. Children first use language to communicate with others, then begin talking to themselves (you’ve probably heard young children narrating their actions aloud), and eventually this external speech becomes internal thought. This process shows how the social world literally shapes our inner mental life. The conversations we have with teachers, parents, and peers don’t just help us learn facts-they shape the very way we think.

Understanding different types of learning contexts

Now that we understand how social interaction shapes learning, let’s explore the different contexts where learning occurs. Educational researchers have identified three main types of learning: formal, informal, and non-formal. Each serves different purposes and occurs in different settings.

Formal learning: the structured path

Formal education refers to the hierarchically structured, chronologically graded education system, running from primary school through university. This is the type of learning most of us are familiar with-it follows a planned curriculum, takes place in designated institutions like schools and colleges, and typically leads to recognized qualifications or certificates.

In formal learning environments, teachers have clear learning objectives, assessments measure progress, and there are established standards that students must meet. A mathematics class where students learn algebra following a textbook, complete homework assignments, and take tests to demonstrate their understanding exemplifies formal learning. The structure and accountability of formal learning make it particularly effective for teaching foundational knowledge and skills that society deems essential.

Informal learning: the lifelong process

While formal learning is intentional and structured, informal learning happens naturally through daily life experiences. Informal education is the truly lifelong process whereby individuals acquire attitudes, values, skills, and knowledge from daily experience and the educative influences in their environment-from family, neighbors, work, play, media, and community.

Consider how a child learns their first language. Parents don’t typically sit down with grammar books and vocabulary lists. Instead, the child absorbs language through countless interactions-hearing family conversations, responding to questions, making mistakes and being gently corrected. This learning is spontaneous, unplanned, and often unconscious, yet incredibly powerful.

Informal learning happens everywhere. A young person learns about relationships by observing how their parents interact. An adult develops problem-solving skills through challenges at work. A teenager discovers new perspectives by talking with friends from different backgrounds. These learning experiences aren’t graded or certified, but they often have the most profound impact on who we become as people.

Non-formal learning: the middle ground

Between the structured world of formal education and the spontaneous nature of informal learning lies non-formal education. Non-formal education refers to any organized educational activity outside the established formal system that is intended to serve identifiable learning objectives.

Non-formal learning takes place in organized settings but with more flexibility than formal education. Examples include community sports clubs where children learn teamwork and physical skills, adult literacy classes for those who missed formal schooling, workplace training programs, and hobby classes like pottery or music lessons. While these activities are structured and intentional, they often don’t lead to formal qualifications and allow for more personalized, practical learning experiences.

A youth group that organizes environmental projects combines learning about ecology with practical skills like planning and communication. Participants learn by doing, and the environment is less rigid than a traditional classroom. This flexibility makes non-formal learning particularly effective for developing practical skills, fostering social connections, and addressing specific community needs.

Creating positive learning environments

Understanding these concepts-learning environments, social learning theories, and different types of learning-helps us see how we can create better conditions for growth and development. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or simply someone interested in lifelong learning, several principles emerge from this exploration.

First, learning thrives in environments where people feel safe, supported, and valued. Both Bandura and Vygotsky emphasized the importance of relationships in learning. When students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and sharing ideas, they engage more deeply with learning. This psychological safety is as important as having adequate physical resources like books and technology.

Second, effective learning environments recognize that we learn best through social interaction. Whether it’s the observational learning that Bandura described or the collaborative dialogue that Vygotsky emphasized, learning is enhanced when we connect with others. This means creating opportunities for peer learning, mentorship, and collaborative problem-solving rather than relying solely on individual study.

Third, variety matters. Formal, informal, and non-formal learning all have important roles to play in education. While formal schooling provides essential structure and foundational knowledge, informal and non-formal experiences develop practical skills, creativity, and personal growth. The best approach often integrates all three types, recognizing that learning happens everywhere, not just in classrooms.

Finally, good learning environments provide appropriate challenges with adequate support-they operate within learners’ zones of proximal development. This means understanding where each learner is and providing just enough guidance to help them reach the next level without overwhelming them or leaving them to struggle alone.
